I am no horse racing expert. The most I have ever won at the track is $24 on a $6 bet, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the sport. The Kentucky Derby is upon us and you don't have to hold a winning ticket to have a Triple Crown weekend! There are so many things to love about the Derby; the dresses, the hats, the bow ties, and of course the MINT JULEPS!! I don't think it's possible to hide my love of a smart cocktail and a Mint Julep is at the top of my favorites list. I prefer a cocktail that highlights the spirit being used instead of masking it with heavy handed mixers. The Mint Julep does just that. Cool, refreshing, not too sweet, and aromatic. Yum.
A mint julep is traditionally served in a silver or pewter cup, doesn't that look icy cold and delicious?
I love commemorative glasses of all types, but Derby glasses have to be the best! My Grandmother gave my Brother a new Derby glass every year, it was one of the special things she did that I miss. I've always wanted to start my own collection, maybe this is the year!

If I were having a Derby Party I would want to serve my Mint Juleps in these beautiful vintage Derby glasses! My guests would be blown away, and it would help keep track of your cocktail. Everyone could choose a different year, keep your hands off my 1985 glass!

This year I plan on trying something new with my Mint Julep! Instead of using the traditional bourbon I'm choosing locally distilled OAK RUM as the star of the show! Oak Rum is the newest member of the Barrel House Distillery family, joining it's siblings Pure Blue Vodka, and Devil John Moonshine. Barrel House ages the rum in bourbon barrels so you're getting the best of the rum and bourbon worlds! An Oak Rum Mint Julep is like the delicious love child of a classic Mint Julep and a Mojito. Need I say more? Ok, Ok, here's how you make it...

In a collins glass:
Dissolve 1 lump of sugar
Add 4 leaves of spearmint, muddle sugar and mint together
Place lump of limestone ice in glass
Add 1.5 oz OAK RUM
Garnish with a slice of orange

I hope everyone above the age of 21 get's to enjoy at least one Mint Julep this Derby weekend! Drink responsibly and win big!!
Love, Cara
